Sun, Fun & Big Guns!

Heading south to escape the frigid, northern winter? You can thoroughly enjoy your sun-drenched getaway and build up your muscles at the same time. Here are the five simple secrets to build muscle while you savor the vacation sun.

A tropical vacation is like stepping into a world where time slows down, the daily grind fades away. You’re in “vacation mode” and out of your usual routine – so it’s so easy to just let workouts slide. Plus, the hot weather and chill vibe just zap your motivation – the last thing you want to do is exercise. The problem is – the longer you stay away from strength training, the more muscle strength and mass you’re going lose. And, if you’re a snowbird heading south for months at a time, you simply have to do something to keep and build your muscles. Here are the 5 simple secrets I’ve discovered to help me stay strong while fully enjoying life in this tropical paradise.

Secret #1 - Write down your workout

Before you leave, just take a few minutes to put together a simple set of strength exercises that can be done anywhere with little or no equipment. And only choose exercises that you enjoy to make your workouts as fun as possible. Having a set list ready-to-go reduces means you don’t have to think before you start exercising.
Pictured here is the list that I use during my winter vacations in the beautiful Dominican Republic.

Secret #2 – Establish a morning routine

It is way easier to work out first thing in the morning when the sun is low and it’s cooler and shadier. Once the blazing sun is up, it’s almost impossible to exercise. Besides, by then you’re probably already into your first or second cerveza.

Secret #3 - Suit up to workout

As soon as you get out of bed in the morning, put on your workout clothes and shoes. This signals your body and your brain that it’s time to exercise. It really helps with motivation.

Secret #4 - Exercise Outdoors

Exercise Outdoors: Getting outside to exercise is inspiring and energizing. Find a shady spot and the morning breeze will keep you cool as you work out. When you’re done, just jump into the ocean for a refreshing reward.

Secret #5 - Improvise!

No gym? No problem! Look around and you’ll probably find plenty of everyday objects that can double as workout equipment. Grab a sturdy rock for shoulder presses or weighted squats. Use a park bench to perform dips. Find an open staircase? That is a perfect spot for pull-ups. And don’t forget the playground. Monkey bars are perfect for chin-ups and knee raises. With a little creativity, the whole world becomes your gym!
